On 3 July 2025, the European Commission announced a major investment of nearly €2.8 billion in 94 transport projects selected under the Connecting Europe Facility, aimed at strengthening sustainable and connected mobility across the European Union. This funding is expected to modernise key parts of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T), enhance cross-border connectivity, and support the transition to greener, more resilient transport systems.
The funding will predominantly support rail infrastructure, which is central to Europe’s low-emission transport future. Around 77 % of the investment is directed towards rail projects that upgrade infrastructure across core and extended TEN-T networks, including the roll-out of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) in several Member States to improve safety and interoperability. High-speed rail lines and critical rail corridors will also benefit, enhancing long-distance and regional connections.
Beyond rail, the selected projects cover inland waterways and maritime routes, contributing to improved multimodal logistics and lower environmental impacts. Upgrades to ports and waterway infrastructure will support cleaner operations and strengthen the competitiveness of Europe’s internal market.
The initiative underscores the strategic role of integrated transport networks in enabling sustainable mobility, economic resilience, and cohesion across European regions. By improving connectivity and transport efficiency, the investment also aims to reduce barriers for cross-border trade and travel, supporting both regional development and European industrial competitiveness.
For the MobiNexus community, this investment highlights the importance of continued innovation in sustainable transport technologies and cross-sector collaboration. The deployment of modernised infrastructure, smart traffic management systems, and interoperable networks will increase demand for new digital and electrified mobility solutions, creating opportunities for research, skills development, and industry-academia partnerships across Europe.
